Hi, my name is Sarah Akers and I was born and raised in Northern Virginia. After I graduated from college I knew that I wanted to work for the Church in some way, shape or form. I studied Theology at a small, Catholic, Liberal Arts school, called Christendom College and I knew that I had been given such rich formation in my Catholic Faith and I was anxious for the opportunity to put this knowledge to practice! When I heard about the mission of FOCUS, I knew this was just the opportunity I was looking for! I joined FOCUS as a campus missionary in 2001 and have been serving in the apostolate for the past 10 years in many different ways. My first 4 years (2001-2005) as a missionary I served at Benedictine College, in Atchison, Kansas (3 years) and then for one year at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, MA. I next stepped into a role at the regional level for FOCUS as the Regional Director for the East coast campuses from 2005-2009. As a Regional Director, I was in charge of overseeing the campuses and missionaries on the campuses in my region which involved traveling to each campus and working closely with our Team Directors and missionaries to make sure our staff were taken care of and the program on the campus level was going well. I am currently serving FOCUS as the Director of Human Resources, at the Denver Support Center, our Headquarters office in Denver, Colorado. In my role in HR, I am able to be a liaison and an advocate for our missionary staff. I am really enjoying this position and feel as though my experience serving on campus and at the regional level has helped prepare me serve our staff in this way. It is truly a blessing to serve the Lord and His Catholic Church through the apostolate of FOCUS.
